what is the history of gematria?

Gematria is an ancient form of numerology that has its roots in Jewish and early Christian numerological practices. It has been used for centuries to interpret the Hebrew Bible and develop a deeper understanding of the divine messages behind certain verses, words and names.

The practice of gematria dates back to the Babylonian period (c. 5th century BCE) where it was used to establish relationships between words and concepts. Gematria borrowed mathematical principles from ancient Greek cultures as well, resulting in a more intricate system of numerical analysis.

In traditional Hebrew gematria, each letter is assigned a numerical value according to its position in the alphabet, with Aleph being 1, Bet being 2, etc. The numerical equivalent of each word is then calculated based on this number system and cross-checked for connections to other words or concepts through an analysis of their gematria score. For example, if two different words had the same gematria score, their meanings could be interpreted as related despite not being closely related linguistically or semantically. Gematria sources can even be used to decode code letters and secret messages that rely heavily on numbers as well as letters for encoding or decoding specific messages or ideas

Gematrically derived values have also been used throughout history to name individuals or localities using certain key combinations of particular letters with specific numerical values. This could imply that those who approved such names may have believed it to carry some deeper spiritual meaning behind them based on the numerical correspondences associated with it.
